Dano Festival

The Dano Festival is a two-day festival held every spring, organized by the Korea Town BIA.  This year, thanks to the organizers and Ms. Cecilia Choi, The Korea Club has been given the opportunity to host our own booth at the festival, showcasing Korean traditional culture through clothing and games.

Our booth will be open Saturday from 12:00pm – 5:00pm.  Check out our photozone where all ages can try on traditional Korean clothing known as hanbok.  We’ll have different styles of hanbok ranging from the robes of kings and queens, to modern fusion dresses, and everything in between.  The photos will be uploaded to our facebook page after the event, or you can even get a special polaroid on site to commemorate the day!

We’ll also have a game zone where you can try your hand at tuho, an arrow tossing game, and children can even decorate their own arrows to take home.

Stick around after to see the Beauties of Dano Contest, as each contestant will be sporting a hanbok from Ms. Choi’s shop!

On April 16th, 2014, the South Korean ferry MV Sewol capsized near Gwanmaedo Island, at the Southwestern tip of the Korean peninsula. The ship was carrying 476 passengers, mostly students from Danwon High School who were on a field trip. At the time of writing, 172 people have been rescued, 35 remain missing, and many have lost their lives.

Tuesday May 13th and Thursday May 15th The Korea Club gave out yellow ribbons in exchange for donations at Sidney Smith lobby as a symbol of hope and solidarity for the survivors and the victim’s families. Through the generous donations of U of T students, professors, and passers-by, we have been able to generate over $300 of funds, which we are donating to the Community Chest Charity, in South Korea.  We hope that by collection donations and wearing these ribbons we can show our support for the families and the South Korean people in their time of mourning.
